Family Constellations

Every family has its challenges, its secrets, its failings, its shadows, which transcend generations. We are bound by hidden loyalties, unresolved trauma, exclusions, and secrets. The entanglements of our ancestors are subconsciously taken up, out of love, by each member of every subsequent generation, causing us to repeat destinies that are not our own.

Lead the world by first meeting your own system.

What are Family Constellations?

Family Constellation is a phenomenological systemic modality that explores relational and intergenerational dynamics through direct observation and experiential process rather than analysis or interpretation.

Bert Hellinger, founder of Family Constellations, explained that families are guided by a common "family soul" that operates as a single systemic consciousness, which drives family members to experience similar situations as a learning experience for the group. Family members do so in service of a "greater love", which seeks to compensate the energetic flow of the family system as a whole.

According to Hellinger: "order precedes love as love can only develop within order".

There are three fundamental and invisible "Orders of Love" which we need to bear in mind:

Belonging:

All members of a family system have an equal right to belong, and when someone is excluded, forgotten, or denied their place, disorder arises with far-reaching consequences. Exclusion can take many forms, including loss, secrecy, shame, adoption, abortion, miscarriage, stillbirth, or family members who are never spoken about. Even when these events remain unacknowledged, the family system retains their imprint. To restore balance, a later family member may unconsciously represent the excluded person. This can lead them to carry emotions, symptoms, or life patterns that are not their own, a phenomenon known as an entanglement.

Family Constellations make these hidden dynamics visible and support the restoration of belonging and systemic order.

Order:

The second basic principle of life, the order of precedence, states that each family member has a rightful place based on the time they entered the system. Those who came earlier take precedence over those who came later: parents before children, and older siblings before younger ones. This order forms a natural hierarchy that supports stability and balance within the family. When someone who joined later unconsciously takes a higher place—by overstepping, displacing, or carrying responsibility that is not theirs—the order is disrupted. Although often ignored in the name of personal freedom, violating this hierarchy has deep consequences for wellbeing and life outcomes.

Family Constellations reveal these hidden disruptions and support the restoration of order as a foundation for a fulfilled and successful life.

Balance:

All relationships are guided by a natural need for balance. When we receive, we feel an inner obligation to give back equally; once balance is restored, both people feel free and complete.

Giving and Taking with Love

In intimate relationships, giving and taking go beyond equality. Partners give a little more than they receive, creating a positive cycle that deepens trust, closeness, and emotional connection.

Disorder in Giving and Taking

Imbalance arises when one person gives too much or takes too much. Over-giving can overwhelm the other, while over-taking creates guilt or resentment—both often lead to breakdown or separation.

Balance by Passing It On

Some relationships, such as with parents or mentors, cannot be balanced directly. Instead of giving back, balance is restored by passing what we received forward—through care, contribution, and service to life.

Balance in the Negative

When harm occurs, both victim and perpetrator feel a pull toward restoring balance. Retaliation often escalates the conflict, turning connection into hostility rather than resolution.

Revenge with Love (Restorative Balance)

True resolution comes from responding with restraint—giving slightly less harm than was received. This interrupts escalation, restores dignity on both sides, and allows healthy giving and taking to begin again.

Family Constellations brings about repair, not through excess, suppression, or moral superiority, but through restoring balance with awareness and care.

The Orders of Love are not abstract principles; they can be felt and recognised in everyday relationships as soon as they are honoured or violated.

Family Constellations involves setting up a "constellation" in which representatives bring about unconscious patterns, often revealing that the client is carrying a burden for an ancestor.

It supports resolution in different ways for each person who sets up a constellation:

Acknowledging "What Is":

Some recognise the "hidden truth" and give every person their proper place.

Honouring the Past:

Some honour the fate of those who came before without trying to "repay" it by sharing it.

Separation of Fates:

Some honour their ancestors' fate, but choose to do things differently; in so doing, they turn away from the past and towards their own lives.

Hellinger's work shows that by bringing hidden dynamics into the light, we can stop the cycle of intergenerational trauma.

Grow your vision

This work is for you if...

• You are a high-performing leader sensing that effort alone is no longer sufficient.

• You notice that unseen systemic or family dynamics may be influencing your leadership.

* You carry a persistent sense of pressure, responsibility, or loneliness.

• You notice recurring patterns in relationships, health, or financial matters.

• You feel loyal or entangled to your family in ways you can’t fully explain.

• You seek personal clarity without long narratives.

• You need to separate personal history from present leadership roles.

• You are ready to release unconscious burdens that are not yours to carry.

• You would like to restore inner order, grounding, clarity, and alignment between your personal and professional life.

• You prefer to lead from choice and grounded authority rather than pressure or compulsion.

• You are ready to let go of inherited or outdated beliefs and patterns, and move toward healthier decisions and relationships.

Humanistic leadership is possible. It starts with inner alignment.

The Three Consciences

Family Constellations work is grounded in the understanding that human relationships are guided by different layers of conscience. These consciences operate simultaneously, shaping belonging, loyalty, conflict, illness, and healing within families and groups. Bert Hellinger described three distinct consciences: the personal, the collective, and the spiritual. Each serves life in a different way—and each has clear limitations.

The Personal Conscience

Experienced as good or bad conscience, guilt or innocence. Its primary function is survival through belonging. It ensures that we remain aligned with the expectations, values, and norms of the groups we depend on—especially in childhood. When our thoughts or actions threaten belonging, we feel fear and guilt; when they secure belonging, we feel good and safe.

This conscience creates our ideas of good and bad, but these distinctions are relative and group-based. What feels “good” inside one group may be harmful or dangerous to others. While the personal conscience is essential for survival and relationships, it is narrow: it connects us to some and excludes others. When extended beyond its limits—through revenge, excessive guilt, or penance—it can lead to escalation, suffering, and even destruction, often with a good conscience.

The Collective Conscience

Behind the personal conscience operates a deeper and more powerful force: the collective conscience. This conscience serves the family or group as a whole, not the individual. Its central concern is completeness. Every member—living or dead, born or unborn, included or excluded—has an equal right to belong.

When someone is excluded due to shame, secrecy, violence, abortion, death, or injustice, the collective conscience seeks restoration. This often happens through entanglement: a later family member unconsciously represents the excluded one by carrying similar emotions, symptoms, behaviours, or fate. The collective conscience is amoral—it does not distinguish between guilt and innocence, victim or perpetrator. Its only aim is to restore wholeness.

Two core laws govern this conscience: the right to belong and the law of priority, which states that those who came earlier have precedence over those who came later. Violations—especially when children take on burdens for parents—often lead to failure, illness, or stagnation. Often, these entanglements arise through unconscious love and loyalty, especially when children attempt to carry burdens, suffering, or destinies on behalf of earlier family members. When order and belonging are restored, healing movements become possible.

The Spiritual Conscience

The spiritual conscience transcends both the personal and collective consciences. It responds to a a wider movement that turns equally toward everything as it is, without exclusion. Harmony with this conscience is felt as calm, clarity, strength, and trust. Disharmony is experienced as restlessness, confusion, and loss of direction.

This conscience does not operate through rules or moral judgments, but through surrender to what wants to move. In spiritual family constellations, minimal structure and intention allow these movements to reveal themselves. Representatives, facilitators, and observers are guided by slow, subtle motions that reunite what was separated. The facilitator’s role is not to interpret or control, but to remain in humility, neutrality, and love for all.

Integration in Family Constellations

In constellation work, all three consciences are at play. Personal problems often arise from conflicts between the personal and collective consciences. Resolution requires honouring the laws of belonging and priority while moving beyond judgment into a wider, spiritual perspective.

When family constellations are guided by the spiritual conscience, they serve life, love, and peace. They allow deep healing movements to unfold—not by force or explanation, but through acknowledgement, order, and inclusion. Often, it is enough to set something essential into motion and trust its unfolding in time.

How the past continues to act in the present

What happened in a family’s past may continue influencing later generations through unconscious identification, loyalty, or entanglement with earlier family members.

Exclusion/Forgetting:

If a family member is excluded, forgotten, or denied their place, a later family member may unconsciously begin to repeat aspects of that person’s fate or emotional experience.

"I will follow you":

Small children often love with a magical and unconscious loyalty that can lead them to follow a deceased parent or sibling into illness, suffering, or even death.

Unresolved Guilt or Trauma:

If a previous generation committed a crime or suffered a great injustice that was never acknowledged, later generations may unconsciously carry movements of atonement, which can manifest as self-destructive behaviours, addiction, depression, or chronic difficulty in life.

Interrupted Movement:

A natural impulse toward love, attachment, or belonging—usually toward a parent—that was disrupted by loss, separation, or trauma. This interruption may continue shaping the present through unconscious patterns such as difficulty with intimacy, repeated relational struggles, emotional withdrawal, or loss of vitality.

Unresolved family situations can show up in later generations:

☆ Repeating relationship or professional patterns.

☆ Financial mismanagement and recurring financial losses.

☆ Inheritance challenges.

☆ Chronic over-responsibility or self-sacrifice.

☆ Anxiety, depression, or unexplained guilt.

☆Persistent physical symptoms that may carry emotional or systemic dimensions.

☆ Difficulty embracing success, ease, or life itself.

☆Collective and intergenerational trauma carried through families, communities, or regions affected by war, displacement, or long-standing ethnopolitical conflict.

Rather than personal failures, these are expressions of systemic loyalty.

Outcomes clients often experience

Often, a few precise movements are enough to create meaningful inner shifts, including:

☆ A deep sense of relief, emotional settling, and inner peace.

☆Greater peace with parents, family history, or inherited family dynamics — particularly meaningful for clients working within family-owned businesses.

☆ Increased inner authority and self-trust.

☆ Increased vitality and grounding.

☆ More clarity in personal and professional relationships, often supporting greater presence, ease, and coherence in leadership.

☆ Reconciliation with the past.

☆ Greater alignment between personal life and professional direction, with increased drive and purpose

☆ A sense of belonging and alignment.

The effects often continue unfolding over time, as individuals and family systems gradually integrate what was seen and acknowledged.

Why it works

Family Constellations work by selecting representatives to stand in for the client and relevant elements of their system. Without needing prior information, representatives often experience sensations, emotions, or movements as underlying dynamics within the family system become visible. Guided by these embodied responses, the facilitator places additional representatives as the constellation unfolds, allowing unseen patterns—often connected to loss, exclusion, or interrupted movements—to come into view. The process is largely non-verbal and experiential, often bringing underlying dynamics into view quickly and directly. Observers and clients frequently resonate with what emerges through representatives, as systemic patterns tend to reflect across individuals. Through this shared process of observation and systemic resonance, new movements toward resolution and integration become possible.
